Μαθητές και μαθήτριες όλων των τάξεων του Λυκείου του Αγίου Δημητρίου, μαζί με μια πολλά υποσχόμενη συμμετοχή μαθητή της 7ης τάξης, έδωσαν τον καλύτερο εαυτό τους στην τελετή μνήμης με τίτλο «Να θυμάσαι μην ξεχνάς» επί τη συμπληρώσει 100 ετών από τη Μικρασιατική Καταστροφή (1922-2022) την Κυριακή 10 Απριλίου 2022 στο Πολιτιστικό Κέντρο «Πέτρος Γ. Πατρίδης». Την εκδήλωση προλόγισε η υποδιευθύντρια του Λυκείου κα Καραγιώργου Ελένη και τίμησαν με την παρουσία τους ο Ιερατικός Προϊστάμενος της εκκλησίας του Αγίου Δημητρίου π. Βασίλειος Τσουρλής, ο πρόεδρος της κοινότητας κ. Θωμάτος Στέφανος, η εκπρόσωπος του Προξένου της Νέας Υόρκης κα Κανελέα Έβελυν, και άλλοι εκλεκτοί προσκεκλημένοι.

Η ατμόσφαιρα της πιο εμβληματικής πόλης εκείνης της περιόδου, της Σμύρνης, αναβίωσε επί σκηνής με τις αφηγήσεις και τους χορούς των παιδιών, τα τραγούδια και τις εικόνες της εποχής. Στην παρουσίαση εκτυλίχθηκαν η περίοδος ευημερίας πριν την Καταστροφή, τα ιστορικά γεγονότα που οδήγησαν στη γενοκτονία του Μικρασιατικού Ελληνισμού, καθώς και η περίοδος μετά τον Ξεριζωμό, με την προσφυγιά και την εγκατάσταση στα «Νέα Μέρη». Ιδιαίτερη μνεία έγινε στη συνεισφορά δύο σπουδαίων προσωπικοτήτων που έπαιξαν καταλυτικό ρόλο στα γεγονότα της εποχής, του Αμερικανού Προξένου στη Σμύρνη George Horton, και του Αμερικανού υπαλλήλου της YMCA στη Σμύρνη Asa Kent Jennings, αμφότεροι ορμώμενοι από την Πολιτεία της Νέας Υόρκης.

Η εκδήλωση πραγματοποιήθηκε υπό την καθοδήγηση των καθηγητριών κας Τσεμεντζή Αγγελικής (ΠΕ02) και κας Σιριστατίδου Παρθένας (ΠΕ06), αποσπασμένων εκπαιδευτικών από την Ελλάδα, με τη συνδρομή του έτερου αποσπασμένου καθηγητή φυσικής αγωγής κ. Κανελλόπουλου Παναγιώτη (ΠΕ11) και του καθηγητή μουσικής τεχνολογίας του Αγ. Δημητρίου, κ. Καράμπα Δημητρίου. Αμέριστη στήριξη στην εκδήλωση προσέφερε η κα Σημάκου Πέγκυ, δασκάλα του ελληνικού τμήματος του σχολείου Αγ. Δημητρίου. Ευχαριστίες στις δύο Γραμματείς, κα Ντούλη Βασιλική του Middle School και κα Μουταφίδου Δήμητρα του High School για τη γραμματειακή υποστήριξη, καθώς και στο Σύλλογο Γονέων και Κηδεμόνων του Αγ. Δημητρίου για την ευγενική χορηγία ροφημάτων και εδεσμάτων.

EVGENIA KATEHIS AND PANAGIOTIS THEOLOGITIS, PARTICIPATED IN THE 2ND INTERNATIONAL STUDENT LITERATURE MEETING “LITERATURE IN A DIFFERENT WAY… IN TIMES OF CRISIS”

Saint Demetrios HS students Evgenia Katehis and Panagiotis Theologitis participated in 2nd International Student Literature Meeting “Literature in a different way… in times of crisis”, hosted by the Mandoulidis School of Greece, under the auspices of the Holy Patriarchate (Constantinople). The topic of their discussion was about «Literature and history in times of crisis»
Our students were chosen to participate and give their views as Greek students of the Diaspora. The students worked with their teachers Ms. Tsementzis.

On April 4th, 2022, Saint Demetrios 9th graders traveled to the Van Gogh Immersive Experience, at Pier 36 in Lower Manhattan. Encompassing 60,600 frames of video, 90,000,000 pixels, and 500,000+ cubic feet of projections, this captivating digital art exhibit transported the students into the world of Vincent Van Gogh and his paintings. Along with that, students were able to create their very-own masterpieces after the dutch artist and display them in the exhibit. They were also able to dive into the world of Van Gogh with a 360 degree immersive VR experience that was included in the trip.

In the spirit of the initiative Read Across America and Greek Heritage Month, the administration of Saint Demetrios school invited two Greek-American authors to the school. Ellen Karadimas and John Theodorakatos visited Saint Demetrios School and spent time meeting, discussing, and holding question/answer sessions with students from elementary school to high school about their literary works.

Ms. Karadimas, author of the young adult historical novel, In the Shadow of Nuremberg, met with stu­dents in grades 8-12 at the Saint Demetrios High School Library on March 11. The author, who has a di­verse German-Greek-American background, spent practically the en­tire day discussing with students her book which was based on the true events that are still impacting our world today. Her heartwarming words on respect, tolerance, and em­pathy for others left her audience with food for thought. The students showed great interest in the author’s life and how her upbringing shaped her writing. The students had been in­troduced to the novel by their English and Social Studies teachers.

On Monday, March 14, John Theodorakatos, author of Johnny and His Flying Blanket, spent the day reading to the students at the Lower Elementary School, and with students in grades 4-7 to read and speak about the power of creativity in writing and combating negativity, which may lead to bullying. In addition, Mr. Theodorakatos gave advice to stu­dents in grades 6 and 7 about how to go about having their best writing published. He reinforced the concepts of positivity, practice, and effort.
