  • IN MEMORY OF POLICE OFFICER ANASTASIOS TSAKOS

The students of Saint Demetrios High School along with teachers and administration attended the last Divine Liturgy of the school year, followed by a special service in memory of POLICE OFFICER Anastasios Tsakos, an alumnus of Saint Demetrios HS (CLASS OF 1995). The officer was killed in the line of duty during HOLY WEEK.

Mrs. Tsakos, the officer’s mother, and members of the NYC Police Department were present for the solemn event, presided by Dean of the Cathedral Fr. Nektarios and members of the clergy. Anastasios was remembered as a hero, a proud Greek-American, and a dedicated family man.

At the end of the memorial service a framed photo of her son with the quote “THE HEAVENS ARE BRIGHTER WITH ONE MORE STAR” was given to the emotional mother. Mrs. Syntilas and Ms. Karagiorgos who had Anastasios as a student while at Saint Demetrios, met briefly with Mrs. Tsakos to share a few memories. The OUTSTANDING FEMALE STUDENT of THE SENIOR CLASS OF 2021 Ariana Antonaros presented Mrs. Tsakos with a small monetary contribution from her classmates raised during SPIRIT WEEK.

On Friday, June 11, 2021 at the SENIOR GRADUATION, the St. Demetrios School Service award will be renamed the Anastasios Tsakos Service Award and will be presented to Ms. Sofia Manassakis who has served on the Student Council for many years and personifies the officer’s strength and determination to make a difference.
