Symposium, The Life and Works of Nikos Kazantzakis

Saint Demetrios High School was honored to welcome several representatives from the International Society of Nikos Kazantzakis who took the time to speak to students about the life and work of this great literary figure, who has impacted the world with his writings and philosophy. Dr. Katerina Zografistou worked with Ms. Karagiorgos and Mrs. Syntilas at Saint Demetrios High School to coordinate the program for grades 9-12. Honorable Georgia Milaki and Ms. Marilena Milanthanaki delivered remarks to the students and faculty about the project which pays special attention to Mr. Kazantzakis and Cretan society.
The 11th grade students Konstantinos Sekeris, Christina Panikidis, and Maria Kokoliou spoke eloquently about their knowledge of Mr. Kazantzakis and the Cretan civilization. The Senior Class of 2025 performed a traditional Cretan dance which further impressed the audience who traveled from Greece for this special symposium which will take them to the United Nations, the Greek Consulate, and several other Greek-American schools.Joining the presenters was also Mr. Manolis Velivasakis, the President of the New York Branch of the International Society of Friends of Nikos Kazantzakis and prominent member of the Greek-American community, along with Mrs. Athena Kromidas, the lifelong educator of the Greek language and former principal of the William Spyropoulos School, and Mr. Nikos Kastrinakis, President of the World Council of Cretans, who is looking forward to further collaboration with our school on other cultural events.
