NEW YORK – In an atmosphere that was simultaneously reverent and festive the Day School of St. Demetrios Cathedral in Astoria held its traditional Christmas celebration on Wednesday afternoon, December 20 in a packed Petros Patridis Hall. In the presence of Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, the students of the school, thanks to the impeccable coordination of the educators, captured the spirit of the holy, luminous, and joyous days to come through theatrical, musical, and dance performances, as well as Christmas hymns. In particular, for another year, a distinctive tone was set by the representation of the Nativity, themed ‘When the Heavens Open’, in a scene that garnered the applause of those present for the students from the 6th, 7th, 10th, and 12th grades. Subsequently, the Choir of the 4th and 6th-grade students performed Christmas carols and ‘kalanta’, connecting the audience with the long tradition associated with the grand celebration in Greek cities and provinces.
